Mesa Arch in Canyonlands is one of the most beautiful places in America, especially at dawn in the winter months.
I took this picture on a very chilly early morning in about 2000. To see Mesa Arch like it is above you need to be there in the winter: December, January, February or close to these months. The sun needs to be in the south, so that it hits the red cliffs below the arch and reflects up into the underside of the arch.
You also need to be there at dawn to see the arch lit up like this. As the dawn fades the red glow in the arch also fades.
When I was there, my wife and I were on our way to an art show in Arizona. We were up an hour before dawn, hiked the mile or so of trail into the arch and set up to shoot the dawn light.
Mostly what I remember about that day is how cold my fingers were.
