A May 5, 2020 article in the American Prospect by David Dayen May titled “We Are Moving Confidently and Proudly Into Mass Death” is an up-front condemnation of the Republican Party. For one thing it says that the Republicans are ready to accept 500,000 American deaths by the end of the summer in exchange for Republican rule and the continuation of the American economy as it was before the Corona virus. Not to mention the reelection of Donald Trump.

This post is based on an article that appeared in the American Prospect a few days ago.

The American Prospect is an American political and public policy magazine on the social-democracy left. The magazine says they it is dedicated to American liberty and progressivism and a glance at their article lineup confirms this. In my experience, American Prospect articles are responsible and accurate. And some of my favorite writers like Robert Kuttner, Michelle Goldberg and Michael Tomasky and many others regularly write for The American Prospect.

The article “We Are Moving Confidently and Proudly Into Mass Death” is part of the American Prospects “COVID-19 Daily Report” which they call “Unsanitized.” All quotations in this post are from this article.

Before I discuss the extremely serious pandemic problems that this article points out, keep in mind that the Covid-19 pandemic is not just a one-off event. It is very likely the first obvious manifestation of the massive ecological catastrophe that is soon to crash down upon all humanity.

Pandemics don’t come out of nowhere; they are caused by the human destruction of ecosystems. When animal habitats are destroyed, as they are by just about everything we humans do, viruses are released to find new animal hosts. For the Corona virus this host was most likely a bat. From there it was just a short step to the spillover of the virus into humans. This is exactly what happened with the Corona virus.

As bad as this Covid-19 pandemic is, it may be child’s play for what is coming next. What happens if another and then another animal virus spreads into humans, all at once? What happens when there are two or three or four pandemics happening all at once, on top of a rapidly warming world that is too hot for humans to survive in? And what happens when Republicans like Trump could care less how many humans die so long as the profits for the rich folks keep on rolling in.

So, could it actually be Americans are moving confidently & proudly Into mass death?

I’m not saying this might happen tomorrow but it is a very definite possibility in our future. And not sometime that will happen in the far distant future. Something like this is very likely to happen before 2050. And such an event is especially likely when all the early warning systems have been, and still are, disabled by our President and his cronies. At some point, not too far away, all of this becomes inevitable.

The American Prospect article begins by pointing out that a lot of people are trying to make sense of the the leaked CDC model that shows corona virus deaths peaking at 3,000 a day as early as June 1. May says that this is “70 percent more than the current plateau, and a whopping 200,000 new cases every day as well.”

Many are saying that this prediction seems very possible, particularly as large parts of the US are now opening up without any real plan for the future.

For one thing, the whole idea that the pandemic is toping out and the curve of new infections is now falling is not true. This really isn’t happening. It just looks like it is happening if you include NYC and other large metro centers where the pandemic began early and is now temporarily declining. If you take NYC and the other early peaking, but now declining, cities out of the averages, the pandemic is growing, it is not declining or disappearing as some hope.

It is beginning to look like the US is on the verge of a very large mistake. Opening the country at this point could very well be a disaster. David May, the author of the American Prospect article has this to say:

Aggregating a large country with one curve is completely misleading, the pullback is happening while peaking is still going on. If you remove New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, where cases spiked early, you see a curve that goes down slightly in the middle of April, causing everyone to relax, and then starts its way up again.

No other country has given the go sign to its population under these conditions.

Countries around the world are starting to return and there appears to be some jealousy or mass delusion that we’re in the same position. We’re not and we never were. In fact Italy’s relaxation of the lockdown looks a lot like our lockdown.

Having blown February by botching testing, we’re on the precipice of blowing March and April by re-opening far too soon. Even California, seen as the responsible actor in this play, is dropping restrictions (albeit not many), doing its part to put the country on a bad trajectory. The signals are all in the direction of placating protesters and putting America back in an incredibly dangerous position.

The leaked CDC report is showing a new ramp-up of the pandemic about two weeks from now, two weeks after the opening of many states. It looks to May that this will not the second wave of the pandemic, but just the second part of the first wave that briefly paused, but after being given new life by the end of lockdown is now going to surge back. Trump is certainly one of the chief instigators of the early end of lockdown:

Donald Trump is sticking with the model made by his economist Kevin Hassett. May says that,

He’s using a “cubic” model which might as well be called a “fit the numbers to Donald Trump’s re-election plans” model. We’re seeing in real time a battle between epidemiologists and economists over predicting the future. Epidemiologists are catching up to limited data and reworking on the fly; economists are lying to flatter their bosses and ignoring reality.

It looks to May that the Republicans are ready to accept mass death in America to get Trump reelected and to continue with the Republican plan of prosperity for the few

If you really play out what the CDC model is showing, it gets you to half a million deaths by the end of the summer. You have to conclude, because what’s happening is so obvious, that this is an acceptable level of death to the president and his staff. They are fine with mass death in America.

They have always been fine with mass death in America; we let mass murderers get guns, after all.

They would rather have mass death than pay for unemployment benefits for too long. Their entire strategy throughout April was to figure out the best way to allow mass death, in service to the economy.

This was a false choice, incidentally; we will have mass death and an obliterated economy. And when that happens, the only straw left to grasp will be the culture war.

Anyone working in the federal government on pandemic response right now who doesn’t want to be known historically as a mass murderer should probably resign.

I have to say that this looks completely logical and obvious from everything we have seen so far. It is obvious to me that Trump and the Republicans could care less what happens to the American people. They seem to care about only one thing, the continuation of an economy that burns as much oil as possible, creates as much wealth for the top 1% as possible, and has no intention of helping the majority of Americans.

There is a lot more to this article, such as Mitch McConnell’s continued success in passing bills that mainly support large American corporations and his ongoing attempt to appoint Republican conservatives to every last judgeship in America. Nancy Pelosi is trying to pass bills that give some aid and protection to the American people but McConnell always seems to find a way to squeeze Pelosi’s requests down to pretty much nothing.

McConnell has learned that he can give up next to nothing for what he wants. The left has been completely locked out of policymaking and Pelosi has a tenuous at best commitment to most of their goals. The packages released thus far have been extremely lopsided, because in the end Democrats are willing to take half a loaf and McConnell knows it.

Things are looking glummer and glummer for both present day America and for post-pandemic America. It may well be that we are moving confidently & proudly into mass death.

But of course no one knows what is going to happen at this point. The future right now is even more unforeseeable than usual. It could turn out that the American people will finally perceive that Trump and the Republicans are not on their side. In an outstanding article in The New Yorker, Jane Meyer hints that Mitch McConnell is getting so outrageously obscene that the end could be coming for him and the Republican dominated Senate.

That would be a great day, but I’m not holding my breath.
