What did Trump actually get done

What did Trump actually get done in his first three years.

When Trump was running for President in 2016 he promised to work for all kinds of great things: clean water and air, better health care, crack down on the banks, tax the rich, create more social benefits, clean up the swamp in Washington, rebuild the American infrastructure and make America great again.  So what did Trump actually get done in this first three years.

Well, the stuff Trump actually got done did little to make life better for Americans,  actually it made it much worse for many.  Below is a short, bare bones list of what Trump actually got done in his first three years of office.

White collar criminal prosecutions are now at a 33 year low.  What this means is that a lot of rich lawyers, bankers and financiers are getting away with breaking the law much more than in the past.

The justice department kicked thousands of voters off voting rolls.  Oddly enough most of these people were not loyal Republican voters.  Most were blacks, hispanics, poor people and others likely to vote democratic.

The National Labor relations board is now more sympathetic to employers than to unions.

Military spending is on track to reach the same levels as during the height of the Iraq war.

There have been huge boosts in fossil fusel production that have caused unprecedented deterioration in air quality.

Any attempt to curb global warming has been totally abandoned. This alone is unconscionable at a time when the dangers to all life on the planet is becoming more and more clear every day.

Tens of thousands of people have lost their health insurance by administrative fiat.  Obama care has been weakened. Medicade has been rolled back in some states.

Millions of people have lost their food stamps and other nutritional aid through administrative cut-backs.

Clean water and clean air has been diminished by hundreds of small changes to existing environmental laws and protections. Most of this has been done via presidential directives and by changes in governmental departments like Environment, Agriculture, and Interior .

Trump’s 2017 tax bill cut the taxes of the rich massively.  This caused a huge windfall for the wealthy while the middle classes and working people saved very little.  And even these piddling savings for most of America are scheduled to be reversed in the early 2020s after the presidential election.

Trump made a lot of immigration changes that were pretty much what he promised.  It is now almost impossible for anyone to get asylum in America.  So much for the huddled masses.  As Vox’s Nicole Narea says, “The Trump administration built up, layer by layer, a series of impediments in Central America, at the border, in detention centers, and in the immigration courts that have made obtaining asylum nearly impossible.”

One of the really bad things happening right now are changes in air quality.  Outdoor fine particulate matter is a really serious problem worldwide.  PM2.5 is very fine particles of mostly carbon in the air that are under 2.5 micons in size.  It is caused by burning almost anything: gas in cars, firewood, forests, fuel oil, propane, natural gas.  When people breathe this stuff it lodges deep in their lungs and even gets into the bloodstream.  In 2015 PM 2.5 killed 4.2 milllion people worldwide.  In the US fine particulate matter caused 88,000 premature deaths in 2015.   And Trump is making the particulate problem in the US much worse by his policies on oil and coal other fossil fuels. In 2018, 9700 more Americans died due to particulate pollution that in 2016.  And what is Trump doing about this?  He is making it more difficult for anyone to see the evidence of what has happened.

So, what Trump got done mostly “amounts to delivering for big business and the wealthy in a much more dramatic way than his populist positioning would indicate. Promises to voters to protect clean air, provide better health care, crack down on banks, and tax the rich have fallen entirely by the wayside.”

And unfortunately this is not what America needs right now. Almost everything that Trump actually got done was done to make himself and his rich, Republican cronies more wealthy.
